Alan, as the writer and producer of Glimpse of Light, what about The Sound of The Wind inspired you to create this song?
Alan: It was a real challenge to write about a complex character like Lucio. This man who’s constantly on the run from his reality - at conflict over confronting his mental health - and yet still holding onto his family. It’s magnetic and for sure inspired me to bring it to life in a song.
I really wanted to capture Lucio’s desire to grasp those moments of reality, those moments of clarity, and the side of the darkness that he often finds himself in. It’s an internal battle and a constant struggle to find that moment of hope and really a place where he can feel at peace. This tension and release were definitely the heart of the song and the lyrics.
I really wanted to capture Lucio’s desire to grasp those moments of reality, those moments of clarity, and the side of the darkness that he often finds himself in.
How did you take these themes from the film that resonated with you and bring them to life in musical form?
Alan: The progression of this song is Dorian. I knew from the beginning this was the sound I wanted to explore for the song because Dorian is a minor mode that borrows colors from a major scale. Here I wanted to express that struggle, that bittersweet feeling, and that little bright moment that represents musically a glimpse of light. The sound designs surround this idea in different moments for example, some harmonies are meant to sound low and dark which represents the darkest parts of Lucio.
While I knew harmonically where I wanted to go, Kyle Dean and I knew the importance of the lyrical content. Christian Gnecco Quintero and Jared Douglas offered a lot of their time to discuss what was their vision of who this character was and in that discussion, we found the name for the song. It was beautiful because it paints the picture of Lucio reaching out with his hands to grasp the light.
To me, Glimpse of Light is the unreachable goal that pulls us out of the dark we’re in
Luke, you are featured on the track. What was it like collaborating with Alan? Can you speak to the process of working together and what arose from that collaboration?
Luke: I’ve been a musician for years so I was excited to collaborate on something, but when I heard the song I was intimidated because I’ve never sung a ballad type song. I saw it as very challenging for me. I’m also not too confident in my voice but Alan seemed confident in me and that gave me faith in the process.
Alan would give me exercises and homework to help me improve vocally. So I had lots of prep to do on my own between our in person meetings. It was hard work, but a smooth process because Alan’s such an easygoing person with great ideas. I was just happy to be working on music.
Alan: I knew this wasn’t Lukes style but I was very excited to hear his talented voice tell this story. Collaborating with a kind hardworking person like Luke can’t be thanked enough. He always kept on top with vocal workouts and preparation and I think he gave more than whatever I asked for. I’m very grateful to him and the passion that resonates with his vocals.
We all have our struggles, but I like to think we are all trying to be the best version of ourselves
What does “Glimpse of Light” mean to you?
Alan: To me, Glimpse of light represents the constant struggle we all go through. The positive and healthy place we all like to be but also the negative moments that are a part of us. We all have our struggles, but I like to think we are all trying to be the best version of ourselves. That sometimes means that we have to accept and balance that negativeness that makes us who we are. It is also an important reminder that we all need people to rely on in our lives and the fact that if we need help we should always reach for that glimpse of light.
Luke: To me, Glimpse of Light is the unreachable goal that pulls us out of the dark we’re in. If we look toward it and keep walking, we’ll find ourselves in the middle of it. To me Glimpse of Light is hope.
I really wanted to contribute to the consistent level of excellence I’d seen when I first saw the film
Luke, besides being a singer you are also an actor. How do you feel that affects/adds to your singing and specifically to your performance of Glimpse of Light?
Luke: My main passion is acting. And I had seen the film first before I heard the song. So when Alan described the emotional state of the music, I did my best to remember Lucio’s struggle and his state of mind during the performance. So it became a story that I had to tell the same way Christian and Stefanie Rons had to play their characters. And the connection clicked.
What would you say was the biggest objective you had as artists on this project?
Alan: My main objective was to find a place and a narrative that felt cohesive with Lucios personality and the world this film created.
Luke: I really wanted to contribute to the consistent level of excellence Id seen when I first saw the film. Thats a long-winded way to say “To NOT mess up!” My nerves were in the way a lot at first but practice and patience got rid of them for the most part.
Follow your ear. Learning your craft is important but letting your ear grow and guide you will help you create music you didn’t know you wanted to do
Do you have any advice for people that are beginning their journey in Music? Or for you Luke, Acting and/or Music?
Luke: Yes. Before worrying about being famous, or recognized, before worrying about someone “giving you a shot” or “believing in you”. FIRST: get obsessed with being GOOD. Thats it.
Alan: Follow your ear. Learning your craft is important but letting your ear grow and guide you will help you create music you didn’t know you wanted to do. Collaborate with as many people as you can. This kind of project pushes you to learn, grow, and rely on others. Be patient. There’s a lot to learn, and so many things you can do with just twelve notes so have fun and keep exploring, always with patience.
